What to Know
Even though your Sprinter isn’t a traditional car, it’s important to not take its care for granted. Bring it to our attention at Lonnie’s Automotive for preventive maintenance service as recommended by the manufacturer and timely planned periodic repairs. Beyond these anticipated service visits, see us for all repairs, including those most reported by Sprinter owners. One of these is known as the “black death.” It’s an issue with the fuel injectors. It happens when a bad ring allows combustion gasses to seep by, creating a tar-like substance over the injectors. Another potential problem is the failure of the glow plug(s) needed to heat diesel fuel for combustion. An issue with the torque converter can create a sound that mimics the roadside “rumble strip” noise. Sometimes this is a result of the wrong transmission fluid, but there may also be another underlying cause. Some drivers also report a breach in an exhaust pipe. The hot escaping gas can disintegrate electrical wiring, causing a shutdown. Also, if a NOX oxygen sensor or the DEF complex system malfunctions, your van can enter the start countdown mode. Once the counter reaches zero, you will no longer be able to start your vehicle. Similarly, a bad DEF or oxygen sensor can cause your automobile to go into limp mode, so it moves in a slow emergency mode to protect the engine.
